May 5th, 2016 – Announcement: Annual Report on Barriers 2015

By | Press Release | No Comments

The OCEHT has officially launched its first Annual Report on Barriers and it has been made available to the public!

The goal of this report is to identify barriers and gaps experienced by persons who have exited or are exiting a trafficking situation with respect to access and availability of services, supports and resources. The report emphasizes areas where service improvement, further service development or partnership may be required, or where services are simply non-existent and therefore require particular attention / action on part of legislators, policy developers and/or funding schemes. These barriers have been observed beginning November 2014 until and including December 2015 by Members of OCEHT.
The OCEHT aims to be transparent and to serve the public and community.  The year 2015 was a year of change for the OCEHT and this reports highlights key changes made to the infrastructure and operations for the past year.  The report also will give you a glimpse of new initiatives and projects in the year to come and how YOU can be involved and help us combat Human Trafficking in Ottawa and surrounding cities.  Please, have a read and share widely!  You will find the report on our website here.

By | Press Release | No Comments

Message from our chair:

Hello friends and fellow community members,

Today – January 11 – is Human Trafficking Awareness Day. It is a day dedicated to raising local, national and global awareness not just about what human trafficking is or how gravely it violates a victim’s most basic human rights, but also awareness that women, men, boys and girls are being exploited and subjected to slavery right here in the National Capital Region! Yes, it is happening right here, right now! No neighbourhood and no city is immune. In fact, during my tenure as Chair of the Ottawa Coalition to End Human Trafficking (OCEHT) I have come to learn that the extent of the problem in our city is grossly underreported and that the response is fragmented and inadequate, with the presence of many service gaps.

This is because human trafficking is clandestine. But also because it strips victims of their individual autonomy, subjects them to some of the worst forms of torture, objectifies them and/or psychologically brutalizes them. This in turn results in resource and service needs that are individually unique to each victim / survivor, that are often present over the longer term and are therefore a challenge to respond to. Through its Committees and various projects, the OCEHT has been working very hard to improve the way this city responds to victims of human trafficking. I am proud to say that we have come a long way in the past 15 months, but am cognizant of the fact that we still have much further to go.

You can help. On the occasion of Human Trafficking Awareness Day I challenge you – each member of our community – to get involved. Join the OCEHT as a member or volunteer (or any other organization working with this issue, such as PACT-Ottawa); request training (we are offering FREE training from January 23-30 to service providers. Please go to https://www.endhumantrafficking.ca/training-blitz/); make a donation, or simply educate yourself on this issue and share what you have learned with your friends, neighbours, colleagues, acquaintances and family members. Awareness begins with dialogue. If you are a victim / survivor and you have a safe opportunity to do so, please reach out to us (victimservices@endhumantrafficking.ca or 613-769-6531) … we are here to support you on YOUR terms.

Together, one person at a time, one organization at a time, one victim at a time, I am confident that we will make a meaningful difference in our community and in the lives of those affected by human trafficking! It is however, up to you to take the first step … I hope you will.

In solidarity,
Zaneta Miranbigi
