I work for the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney general within the Victim Witness Assistance Program in Ottawa, as the designated human trafficking Victim Witness services worker. My role is to support vulnerable victims and witnesses that are going through a criminal process from the moment charges are laid until it is resolved before the Court. We do so by providing case information, making sure their input and concerns are conveyed and advocated to the Crown’s office, in charge of the prosecution as well as connecting them to community organisations to have their basic needs addressed. If they have to testify for a trial, we coordinate their preparation and ensure they have the support needed for their participation. A number of different criminal case fall under our mandate, including but not limited to domestic violence, sexual assault, homicides, guns and gangs, human trafficking among others. Within the Victim Witness Assistance program, we have noticed an inceasing numbers of human trafficking cases thus now more than ever, it is significantly important to develop partnerships, resources and services to combat it. As a result, I would like to become a member of OCEHT to improve my knowledge as well as expanding and put to use my skills to become a vector of change.
